As we reflected on the success of May’s Open House, one thing became clear: breaking into marketing doesn’t come with a manual. We’ve seen enough of what works (and what doesn’t) to share a few pointers that might help you stand out.
Whether you made it to the event or are just tuning in now, here are our top tips for getting started in marketing:
1. Understand the Bigger Picture
Marketing is broad, from content and branding to strategy, paid media and analytics, understanding what is going on in not just generally in the world, but also in your local area is integral to uncovering new creative ideas or story hooks.
One of our top tips? Stay up to date with the news - whether that’s by flipping through the papers or scrolling online, on your phone. And if PR’s your thing, knowing the UK media landscape will always be your superpower. Understanding what stories fit where, and how to land features in the right titles, at the right time is half the battle.
And don’t forget – events like our Open House are the perfect chance to ask questions and figure out what actually excites you.
2. Set Yourself Up Professionally
Before you hit “apply”, make sure your CV and LinkedIn profile tells a clear story. You don’t need years of experience - but you do need to show thought.
A short portfolio, some side projects, or even a well-written case study of a campaign you admire can go a long way. We met some standout attendees at the Open House who didn’t have traditional experience but absolutely nailed their presentation and curiosity. That’s what we remember.
3. Go Beyond the Basics
What really impresses agencies? People who go the extra mile. That might mean starting your own blog, experimenting with content on TikTok, or completing online courses and apprenticeships. The initiative to do something - even small - sets you apart.
Our best tip is not to wait for a job title to start behaving like a marketer!
4. Be Curious
The most successful marketers we know never stop learning. They ask why. They test things. They follow culture. Whether it’s a short online course, a passion project, or staying on top of trends, curiosity is your superpower.
And yes - we noticed this during our latest Open House. The best conversations came from people who asked smart, thoughtful questions. It shows you care, and that matters.
5. Research the Agencies you Apply To
Something that can easily set you apart is glancing over work previously done by the agency or workplace to have in your back pocket, should a relevant topic come up. If you’re serious about breaking into marketing, research the agency, know their clients and understand their tone of voice. Personalised applications always rise to the top.
