As we step into 2025, January makes its grand entrance once again. Often dubbed as the most challenging month of the year, its no surprise that “Blue Monday” – the so-called saddest day of the year – looms large on our calendars. But here at Leopard Co, we see January not as a time to hibernate, but as a season for sparking creativity.

We’re firm believers in the power of creative expression and its profound ability to  boost mental well-being. But don’t just take our word for it! Research by  Adobe Foundation and NAMI both show that nearly two-thirds (65%) of people who engaged in creative activities reported an improved sense of confidence. Additionally, the research also revealed that 61% of people reported reduced stress or anxiety, while 57% said they experienced improved overall mental health.  A powerful case for embracing creativity!

Why Does Creativity Feel So Good?

Creative activities can work wonders for the mind, offering a range of benefits that help alleviate stress and cultivate positivity. Here’s a few reasons why we think it’s a powerful tool to beat the January blues:

  • Stress Reduction: Creative tasks refocus your mind, pulling your attention away from other worries, helping to calm the brain.
  • Mindfulness: Creative pursuits are a good way to anchor you in the present, reducing anxiety about the past or future.
  • Emotional Expression: Art provides a safe outlet for processing and expressing complex emotions.
  • Encourages Exploration: Trying new creative activities helps foster curiosity, build resilience, and open you up to new possibilities.

When you create, your brain releases dopamine – the "feel-good" hormone. This natural boost enhances your sense of well-being and can be a valuable way to process emotions.

You Don’t Have To Be an ‘Artist’ to Create Art

The beauty of creativity lies in its accessibility – you don’t need to be a professional artist to reap its benefits. Everyday activities can become acts of creativity, and you might even be practicing some without realising it. It’s easy to incorporate creativity into your routine. Here are a few simple ways to get started:

  • Journaling: Spend a few minutes writing your thoughts without overthinking
  • Doodling or colouring books: Simple, therapeutic ways to focus your mind
  • Photo walks: Explore your surroundings and capture moments that inspire you. (This is a regular occurrence on our lunch-break at Leopard HQ)
  • Reading: Escape into a book and let your imagination take flight

Take It Up a Notch: Creative Challenges

Feeling adventurous? Set yourself a mini challenge! For a fun way to escape, here are some ideas to try:

  • Graphic Design: Turn your favourite photo into a line drawing
  • Brand Development: Reimagine and redesign the logo of your favourite brand
  • Copywriting: Picture your favourite celebrity as a superhero and come up with a catchy slogan for them

Embrace Creativity This January

January doesn’t have to feel heavy or overwhelming. By weaving a bit of creativity into your routine, you can ease the weight of the season and start the year on a positive note. Whether you’re doodling on a notepad, trying something entirely new, or testing your skills, consider this your reminder to embrace creativity and let your imagination flow. Your mind will thank you for it.
